it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"You teach 6th grade? Wow!" That is often what I hear when asked what I do. I have 30 motivated students, many who are English Language Learners, wanting who want to learn everything about anything. My students come from a low socioeconomic background, with limited resources available.
My 6th graders are incredible, they are eager to learn with the materials that are given to them and what their teacher can provide.
We are a Title I school in Sparks, Nevada, that was built in the 1950's, with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program. Many are responsible for their younger siblings who also attend my school. They are determined to succeed and all work incredibly hard everyday. They appreciate everything that the school and community do for them.
My Project
My students have developed an interest in reading novels during our guided reading time. This is awesome for reluctant readers, but it has become a challenge to find the number of books needed for the different groups in my class. Our school has many resources for the primary grades, but lacks interesting books for the students in sixth grade that are at their reading levels. Teacher ingenuity has led to borrowing copies books from various teachers' libraries and sharing. However, we have gone through our existing sets of books and need some new ones. To nurture this new found interest in reading, my students would benefit from these class sets of novels.
My students do not complain when they use an extremely well-worn book, that resembles something a truck has run over, but they would really love a class set of several novels.
In other words, my students would greatly benefit from some new books. These books will not be used by just my class, but with the other sixth grade teacher, during our literacy study time. We could really use some new books!
