My students need leveled books to read independently. Our genre for the upcoming unit is autobiographies and biographies, and each child's book will focus on overcoming obstacles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are thinkers, readers, leaders, and world changers. In my classroom we reflect on who we are and where we come from in order to better understand how we can shape the future. Each and every one of my students is capable of academic success and life-long success in chasing their dreams, and it is my job to communicate my belief in their abilities and to help them hone the skills they'll need to make their dreams a reality.
I teach at a Title I school in Connecticut where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Connecticut is overall a wealthy state, but the educational wealth is unevenly distributed. Schools are still largely segregated, and Connecticut has one of the widest achievement gaps - between schools that serve white students and schools that serve students of color - in the country. My students deserve an excellent education, because they themselves are excellent, and are committed to shaping America into the country they want it to be.
My Project
In an age where technology is increasingly taking over the school day, I have begun leading students in extended book studies to help build reading stamina and a love for books. I am supplementing our curriculum of electronic texts and short stories with full-length books that we read three times weekly, and each child reads their own book on their own instructional level. We just finished reading historical fiction, and I was amazed at how excited students were to read each day. Some said it was the first time they had ever finished a "whole book" on their own.
These biographies and autobiographies will simultaneously build students' reading ability and their knowledge of great figures in history.
The books requested range from a 3rd grade reading level for my emerging readers to a high school level for my advanced readers. Purchasing a wide selection of content and levels ensures that there will be a book for each child in our upcoming unit.
