I am a French teacher at a high school, a low-income school with a diverse student body. I am often the only French teacher students have throughout high school and I have created amazing, meaningful relationships with them. They recently renovated our classrooms and I would love to create a dedicated reading nook with updated Francophone books for students to enjoy. My current books are ancient and do not accurately represent the variety and diversity of current Francophone authors available, a diversity that reflects our student population.
This grant will purchase new modern, diverse books and comfortable reading chairs for my classroom to encourage students to read in French and provide them with a wide range of compelling choices.
The new chairs will create a comfortable and inviting space for students to relax and focus on their reading. Students can choose books to connect with their own interests and situations while practicing their French.
Increasing literacy and reading proficiency is a school-wide goal this year. Encouraging kids to read in languages other than English also supports literacy in English.
I would like to purchase reading chairs, a rug, and a lamp along with multiple copies of 16 new books from a variety of Francophone authors and subjects. These books should be appropriate for a high school-level audience.
This grant will make a significant and positive impact on my classroom learning environment. New books and chairs provide students with a wider range of appealing choices and a comfortable and inviting space to read. Upon success of this project, all French students will benefit.
