Inspired by Scientists Like Me

Help me give my students a selection of books about women and minority scientists.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Votaw's classroom raised $412

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are part of a rural community in a high poverty area. Many are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents. Ninety eight percent of students in my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. There is also a large percentage of special education students in the school population.

My students have limited background experiences, and very little access to books outside of school.

Any opportunity I can give my students to build their knowledge through reading is a plus.

My Project

One of our reading units is The Making of a Scientist, which always excites my students because they love science. However, all of the scientists focused on in the unit as it is designed are traditional white males. Don't get me wrong, I am extremely grateful for everything that has been done in science by white males, but my students see this and think "they're not like me, I can't do that."

By reading books about women and minorities who have made contributions in science, my students will better relate to the world of science.

They will begin to realize that they too can pursue a STEM career.
