My Project
Students keep a reading journal to record and share their thoughts as they read. They also have a chance to respond to each other's journals, which builds trust and rapport in class and makes our in-class discussions more dynamic. I think this really helps improve student's own ability to self-reflect, and feel less alone in the world, as well as build empathy with each other.
The journals really help give students a chance to try out various ways of responding, too, be it creative writing, active reading and analysis, personal connection writing in which they think about their lives and experiences, or they prepare and organize their thoughts about how their readings relate to class discussions.
They can also opt to draw their feelings and reflections, or elements of what they've read, using the requested markers.
