This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help us create a calming and relaxed learning environment through the implementation of Yoga therapy for students with disabilities. Yoga therapy addresses a wide range of developmental goals including motor, sensory, emotional, psychological, perceptual and immune benefits. Yoga assists children to develop a sense of inner control – positively impacting their need to feel safe, interactions with other and the ability to reduce stress.
I work in a high-poverty school, with 15 Special Education Students in South East Los Angeles.
My students strive to overcome intellectual, physical, and emotional challenges every day. The students within my classroom are diagnosed with Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and health impairments such as ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorders. My students need to learn effective ways of managing anxiety and self-control. Yoga strengthens and helps students become more flexible and coordinated. Yoga for kids also enhances self-awareness. Children who practice yoga learn early on to tune into their bodies. Self esteem is bolstered as the children gain control over their bodies and minds, but we need the tools to make them successful.
My Project
The yoga mats will provide a clean and sanitary learning environment to prepare my students to be active participants in Yoga therapy.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavioral issues, because I will be able to provide the appropriate coping skills training through Yoga therapy.
Yoga has an outstanding ability to address both the physical and emotional needs of students with special needs . Yoga develops motor skills. Yoga tones muscles, enhances balance and stability, and develops body awareness and coordination. As motor skills develop, children have a greater sense of their physical self.
Yoga improves confidence and social skills. By learning self-control and self-calming techniques through yoga, they are likely to grow confidence in interacting with other children and refine their social skills. Learning to work together in a yoga class and playing with partner poses can also increase confidence within group settings.
