Our 6th graders could deeply benefit from reading Linda Sue Park's novel: A Long Walk to Water. This is a story of survival, perseverance, and strength. It is also engaging for the reader as it tells the story of two children, Nya and Salva. As the story is told in alternating points of view and in two different timelines, it helps our 6th grade teachers expand upon the characters struggles to survive in the harsh environment of Southern Sudan. Water is also a huge marker in this story. Water is the main symbol in A Long Walk to Water. Water represents life and death. Nya's life revolves around getting water but is dangerous because of the diseases it carries. Water is also important to Salva. He uses water to unite the people of Sudan.
