This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will provide students who have struggled with reading a safe and welcoming space to grow as readers. Many Deaf and Hard-of-hearing (DHH) students struggle with reading because English may not be their first language, among other language needs. Using bilingual strategies (American Sign Language/English) in my classroom and the materials from this project will support students' literacy development at such a critical stage. The bean bag chair, area rug, and bookshelf are staples in creating this reading nook that will allow students to take a break from traditional seating and unwind with a book.
Sometimes students need a “reset” to let go of the anxiety with reading that past negative experiences has given them.
The various puzzles (including wooden ones) and stress balls in this nook will provide students with the self-regulating tools to do just that. High-interest graphic novels give Deaf and Hard-of-hearing students confidence in their reading comprehension abilities while building vocabulary so that they continue to climb reading levels and gain a positive perspective and enjoyment of reading. It's amazing to see what students can accomplish when they gain confidence in their reading abilities. Not only does their writing improve but their reading fluency allows them to access subject matter through informational text.
The versatility of the furniture, books, and puzzles/fidgets requested will allow me to adapt the reading nook in the classroom to meet the literacy and emotional needs of my DHH students year after year. As a second-year high school teacher working with students of diverse language and literacy backgrounds, there is still a long way to go and this project will be a great start.
