New class sets of The Outsiders will enable our 8th graders to learn about compassion and enjoy this classic S.E. Hinton novel for many more years. Our current sets are very old and falling apart.
We teach our student's to view the world through another's eyes with the story of Ponyboy, a disadvantaged teen in The Outsiders.
This novel explores a world of violence, friendship, and compassion through two conflicting groups, the Greasers and the Socs. These two groups are defined by their socioeconomic status, and not much else.
The themes in The Outsiders are still very relevant today. The gap between the rich and the poor, honor, the cycle of violence, and that we all have commonalities that bring us together. We measure student success through projects, tests, and essays. Plus we have a fun dance at the end of the unit, where our students get to dress up as Greasers and Socs.
The students at LMAAC are very diverse and extremely creative. We use the things that we have in common to alleviate pain and to promote compassion. Our shared love of art, music, dance and culture help to bring us together and see the world thorugh another's eyes. Learning about The Outsiders helps our students to understand that we all have different perspectives, and they are all relevant. If we never look at the world through someone else's eyes, we are only seeing a sliver of the world around us.
We hope that our students will have a better understanding of our world after reading The Outsiders. And hopefully, be more compassionate and understanding as teens and adults.
