My Project
Middle school is a critical time for social-emotional development, identity formation, and self-reflection. I am requesting funding for the book "What Color Suits You, July? "so that every student in middle school can have their own copy. Our middle school (Student and Teacher teams) have composed a mini teen summit that will allow our middle school students to attend and lead different content sessions with a substantial SEL twist. Our hopes and beliefs are that our students will gain self-efficacy, feel cared about, understand their emotions and how to ask, get the help that he or she may need, and have fun.
"What Color Suits You, July"- is a powerful, relatable book that uses metaphor, narrative, and introspection to help young people explore who they are, how they feel, and how they show up in the world-What Color Suits You, July is a powerful example of racial justice and representation, as it uplifts diverse voices and encourages students to celebrate their identity, culture, and self-worth.
This book is a perfect tool for helping students connect literature to real-life emotional challenges and victories.
By using it to create thoughtful reflection and dialogue, we can build students’ confidence and sense of purpose.
Ownership: Students can annotate, highlight, and take notes, making their learning personal and meaningful.
Accessibility: Each student can read at their own pace, revisit passages, and reflect on sections that speak to them.
Equity: Providing a book for every student ensures all learners have equal access to this important SEL resource.
Goals for Book Project:
Promote Self-Reflection and Self-Efficacy: Students will identify their personal strengths, values, and aspirations by connecting with the character of July.
Encourage Positive Peer Connections: Through shared reading and conference activities, students will practice empathy, listening, and supporting one another in a safe environment.
