Inside Out: Classroom Edition!

Help me give my students fidget toys to aid them in their emotional well-being. Self-regulation must be taught to students. These toys can help children regulate high emotions so they can understand themselves and others by sorting feelings.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As our society progresses towards more accessible technology, students are faced with screen-time now more than ever. This means students' interpersonal relationships are struggling and their ability to make connections are being stifled. We learn so much about ourselves from others, notably our tiny humans. When that is compromised, children are growing up with less and less opportunities to learn about those different from them and gaining perspective. Part of that is learning to play and regulate emotions as well.

Play helps students become more creative and allows them to learn how to cooperate with others.

It also invites conflict, and students must know how to navigate tough situations and big emotions by self-regulating. Through regulating, students are given the chance to calm down, pause and reflect in order to become a more emotionally intelligent person.

Teaching in a low-income school means my students are experiencing situations that can be well beyond their understanding. They often don't have the resources to be able to navigate their feelings and emotions that come with an unstable or traumatic events. Part of my job is to be a safe adult for my students, and that means teaching them that just because they are little, doesn't mean their big emotions are invalid. It's amazing to see children open themselves up to a new way of thinking and seeing their growth.
