Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have very limited access to technology, but are not limited in their curiosity. I want to give them the wealth of science knowledge that exists on the Internet, but it is not always possible, because we just don't have the resources in my classroom to meet that need.

My students are wonderful, inquisitive, highly intelligent individuals.

They are only limited by the resources available to them. My students are 94% Economically Disadvantaged, 80% Hispanic, and 11% African American. Most don't have computer access at home, so the only chance they get to use computers is at school. I feel it is my responsibility as not only a science teacher, but also as a person who has a vested interest in the future leaders of our society, to equalize the playing field for my students. Part of that equalization process is providing the Internet access and computer skills that more affluent students (and even you and I) take for granted. They need to have 21st century skills in order to attend college and break the cycle of poverty that is prevalent in the community in which I teach.

My Project

My students are in the midst of conducting their own experiments for our school's 2nd annual science fair. Hands-on experimentation is a huge part of science, but it is not the only part that my students need to be able to do. Conducting online research, typing papers, creating data tables and graphs, collaborating on Google Docs, networking with scientists in the community - these are all very essential skills. Without these skills, my students will be severely disadvantaged in the college application process and the job market. It is my job to not only teach my students the scientific method, but also to teach them how true scientists conduct research, prepare their data, and construct their science boards for conferences.

Every one of my students can be successful in whatever they want to do if they are given the chance.

Their life goals are only limited by the amount of access they have to 21st century technology. They are definitely not limited by the amount of enthusiasm and dreams they have for their own futures. Adding 2 Chromebooks to the 3 that we already have in the classroom will increase the frequency that each student gets to go online, expand their science knowledge, and follow their dreams.
