My Students
Loving History depends on an individual's innate curiosity and ability to identify aspects of themselves in the events and lives of the past. Guided Inquiry gives students the flexibility and space to develop that love, and this past year, with the help of technology, I've watched students LOVE history.
My students are inquisitive human beings with a thirst for social justice and equity.
Our school is an urban public school in the heart of Portland, Oregon. Students at our school pride themselves on celebrating the diversity that our location offers; it's a welcome space for all students because of their respect for different gender identities, religions, ethnicity, races, sexual orientations, and abilities. Our school is known for its high standards, and the high achievement levels of our students. These kids really do hold our futures in their hands and that makes me feel great.
My Project
Students in my classes (US History, IB 20th Century World History, and LGBT Queer History) will work on an independent inquiry project based on a historic topic of personal interest and historical significance. Students will be given time during the school year to explore the voices from history that most speak to them. Although many of the students can provide their own technology, not all of them can. This project is requesting a Chromebook to ensure equality of access for students who do not have their own, or forget to bring theirs, or forget to charge theirs. Access to the Internet will be critical to the success of the independent inquiry projects: students will need their own device to do their own research (I am also requesting a protective case to ensure our Chromebook stays safe!).
Inquiry-based History inspires students to see that today's passionate debates are part of a long culture of diverse perspectives.
The independent research project will ensure that all students find their own personal connection to History. Without their own devices, my students will be unable to efficiently use their class time. Your donation to this project will help students find their own voice, and see their own identity, in our world's great history.
