Inquiry-Based AP Biology Lab Materials for Young Scientists
My students need a kit of AP Biology lab materials to discover the topics of AP Biology using an inquiry-based approach, and to meet the requirements of being an AP Science Course
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is project-based high school in which students learn through real-world, inquiry-based activities and take ownership over their individualized learning pathways. We focus on helping our students develop into well-rounded, reflective individuals who advocate for themselves and others. My school community is made up of a very diverse student body, many of which are English Language Learners or recently immigrated to the United States with their families, and about 75% come from low-income backgrounds.
My students love experiencing science in using a hands-on, inquiry-based approach and get very excited when they can "see" science happening in my classroom!
As they work through a challenging AP Biology curriculum, my students are truly able to understand complex biological concepts when experiencing these concepts through labs that they design themselves.
My Project
My project will provide students with a kit of all of the AP Biology lab supplies that are necessary to complete the required AP labs. This includes a gel electrophoresis kit, mutated flies to study population genetics, plant pigments and paper chromatography to study the Rf value of various plant pigments, materials to study the heart rate of Daphnia, butterfly larvae to study food preference behavior, a kit to explore the effects of hydrogen peroxide on catalase enzymes, potometers to study respiration in bush bean seeds, and respirometers to study cellular respiration of seeds.
The materials provided in this kit will give my students the opportunity to do all of the 13 required AP Biology labs, which will both deepen their understanding of biological concepts and allow them to qualify to take the AP Biology exam in May.
