See what Ms. D. is requestingMy students need advanced laboratory supplies to learn inquiry and to allow them to be successful in advanced college level Biology classes.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from various backgrounds and living situations which, for most individuals, would be a huge impediment for success. Many will be the first to graduate from high school and most the first to go on to college.
Where many see failure I see the possibility of success if only they can be engaged in learning.
They come from an inner city, low income, majority free and reduced lunch school where learning can easily be swept to the side. I see these young, talented, and full of potential students walking in and out of my class day in and day out with their future still open to possibility.
Learning can happen in many ways but one of the most critical is inquiry. These students have decided to pursue a chance at a higher level of education in the sciences through IB Biology. This challenging course requires them to not only engage the mind through traditional learning but through inquiry hands on learning as well.
For these students to be successful in their pursuit of learning and academic success they need to be given the supplies to do so.
Unfortunately, they cost more than can be supplied by the school and the help of the community is greatly needed. IB Biology requires a minimum of 65 hours of hands on lab activities. Each lab and activity cover mandatory material and reinforce topics that the students need to know for their exam at the end of the course. For example, the dissections will help to reinforce the human anatomy and physiology unit assisting students in not only better understanding the working of the internal organs but actual shape, size and texture. The quantitative analysis and statistics is monumental in preparing the students for when they need to develop their own investigation complete with data and analysis of the information collected. Each advanced activity is specifically chosen to correspond with a matching standard of study and all instrumental in the success of the student in the course.
The skills the inquiry labs teach the students reach farther than just the Biology classroom. These are skills needed for all academic classes. They also teach them ways to solve everyday problems they may come across in their lives. These life long skills can not only help them but also the community around them.
