Inquiring 2nd Graders Need an iPad to Investigate Literacy!
My students need an iPad during our Literacy Block to help increase their literacy skills. I want to access every possible avenue available to help these kids read!

My Students
My students love technology! I am amazed at what 7 and 8 year old kids can accomplish if given the right tools to succeed! I teach students in 2nd grade who are struggling readers. I am doing all that I can to ensure that they are at grade level when they start 3rd grade! An iPad will inspire them!
I teach second grade in a Title I school in Colorado.
My school is considered a "High Risk" school. A Title I school means that my school has a high free and reduced-price lunch rate (75.9%). My school also has a large percentage of NEP/LEP (Non-English, or Limited English Proficient) students (22.6%), as well as a high minority rate (59.4%). The students at our school face many challenges, no matter what their ethnic background. Many of our families are struggling to meet the basic needs of their children. We have a high number of families that live together in single households. It is also not an uncommon sight to see grandparents and even great-grandparents care for the children in this community. What has inspired me to stay for 15 years is seeing firsthand the potential for my students and being witness to their desire to learn and achieve.
My Project
I am the reading interventionist for 2nd grade. In our 90 minute reading block I have nine students who are below level readers. My school uses an excellent reading intervention program that has been shown to be effective. It is during the independent time that this tool will inspire my 2nd graders to read! I teach 3 students at a time for 30 minutes; during the rest of the time the students are busy with independent centers. I have 2 computers on which the students access "RAZ Kids." This is an excellent reading program that helps build fluency as well as comprehension. Unfortunately, there is always one student left out. Having this tool will help solve this problem as well as stimulate the students to explore other reading applications available to use! I am amazed by how quickly my students access and use technology! For many of my students accessing technology is only an option at school. I want my kids to have all the opportunities that all students have. This tool will help them.
Having an iPad in my 2nd grade classroom will help my struggling readers increase their reading ability, while building their confidence using technology.
Research shows that students who are successful in school are near or at grade level by 3rd grade. I am doing all that I can do to help my kids achieve this attainable goal. It will help my students a great deal to have access to powerful reading applications during their independent time to achieve this goal. I want all kids to succeed!
