My Students

I work in a high poverty area, in the Bronx, NY. My students are severely underserved, and my school has very limited resources. When the students find a task too difficult, they act out. I have noticed that when they 'get it' they pay more attention. I want to teach the kids content plus skills. I service a self-contained, special education population with various disabilities. Some of the disabilities are Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability, ADHD, and Emotional Disturbance.

Most of my students are visual and kinesthetic learners, having lab materials will make the lessons more engaging for them.

My Project

My students need science materials to inquire about the world around them. Many students study the units but need lab experiments to help them visualize what they are learning. Most of my students are kinesthetic learners and by having them complete the lab investigations, they are learning in the best methods possible for them.

The students need opportunities to study diseases, ecology and plants; the next big scientist or doctor may be in my classroom; I am looking to help foster their love of learning and love of science.

I want to have Students who wonders about the possibilities around them.As scientists, lab safety is very important, my students will be able to do more engaging labs by having the proper safety materials, they need the goggles for when they work in the classroom especially when they do dissections.

A big unit in the 8th grade is Reproduction, Genetics and Evolution. These can be hard concepts to teach. The students can do lab activities to study genetics and evolution. In the spring, they can use the soil kit to go outside and explore the environment around them. The leveled library will help organize the reading content to their Lexile level. I teach grades 6-8, so the students are learning about physical science and life science. The DNA kit will help bring the concept of genetics to life for them.
