This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ignacio Estrada once said, "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." I couldn't agree more. I teach in a self-contained classroom full of amazing 5th-8th graders with severe and profound disabilities.
My students are eager learners who work tirelessly to soak in all the knowledge they can, all while spreading smiles and joy to everyone they encounter along the way.
Even with this drive to learn, my students don't experience success with traditional teaching methods. Our daily routine centers around teaching in ways that they learn best, targeting instruction to students' specific learning, developmental, and social needs. This is hard because my students are from an extremely low-income neighborhood, meaning there is little to no funding for any materials or experiences outside of the district-mandated curriculum, which isn't accessible for my students due to their disabilities. They need other varied, hands-on, differentiated, and engaging materials to help them grow and be successful.
All children can learn- my students' disabilities just mean that their learning looks a little different than that of others. Help them get what they need so we can teach the way they learn best.
My Project
Each of my students' learning needs varies significantly, so this wide array of materials will help them have engaging, hands-on ways to practice skills necessary to help them achieve their individualized goals. These materials will provide my students with hands-on practice for reading and math, as well as help with their fine motor and developmental skills.
All of the items requested have been done so with a specific student, and their individualized learning plan, in mind.
All that's needed is your help to get these differentiated activities through the door of our classroom!
Your support will help one of my students continue to work on mastery of sight words, allowing him to become more confident and comfortable is his reading abilities. Your support will help another one of my students continue to master her basic counting skills, working with multi-sensory materials to commit her understanding of numbers to memory. Your support will help yet another student learn to self-soothe when she feels her emotions elevating, bringing herself back to a state where she is ready to continue learning. And this is only the beginning of the deep impact these materials will have on my students and their growth this year and for years to come.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
