This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When it comes to the wonder of reading, Dr. Seuss said it best, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” But how do we make sure that every student has the opportunity to read, learn, and “go” all those amazing places that reading can take them?
My students are struggling readers who need the opportunity to become capable learners.
The kindergarten through third-grade students I work with are reading well below grade level. Having struggled with basic reading skills, they need intensive, targeted intervention to help them improve their reading, which is vital to their success in all academic areas.
To add to their reading challenges, my students live in a low-income neighborhood where they face numerous disadvantages. Unable to control what goes on outside of school, I try to make the most of their time with me by doing what I can do to maximize their learning. They need engaging literacy instruction and rich, meaningful learning that will help them overcome their challenges and experience that 'wonder of reading.'
My Project
The Osmo reflectors can support students' work during intervention in numerous ways. Because the reflector directs the students' iPad camera downward, it provides a kind of bird's eye view of the student at work (similar to a document camera). Combined, with the Zoom meeting platform, I would be able to watch the students at work, whether they are working at home, or in the classroom.
The Osmo reflectors would enable me to see the students' learning in action.
Being able to see the students as they are reading, writing, and using manipulatives, would enable me to see how well they are understanding the concepts and to provide corrective feedback, as needed. The students would also be able to easily share their work with others, allowing for more meaningful discussions about our learning.
Thos students still learning at home and as well as those who have returned in the hybrid model would benefit from the Osmo reflectors. The reflectors can be sent home for select students who need extra support and would benefit from more guidance and immediate feedback. It would greatly support the in-person learning of those in the hybrid model, as well. It would enable me to see the students at work while maintaining social distancing. Having the reflectors also opens up the possiblity of incorporating some of the Osmo software and materials into my teaching. The Osmo reflectors are a small, innovative tool that can make a big impact on my students as growing readers.
