Hello! I teach art in a middle school in one of the most diverse communities in America. We have students who have come here with their families from all over to world to get a better education. I have many driven kids that deserve to excel and reach their creative potential in my art classroom!
My students amaze me everyday.
They are funny and sweet and there is so much about them that I learn from regularly. The kids thrive when I show them new techniques and different ways to use materials. It is a privilege for me to be able to teach such a diverse group of students. My school is just outside of Atlanta, in a smaller town that is filled with culture. People here are coming to America from Eastern Asian countries and well as African countries. Their parents are very committed to giving their children a better education. The students are also eager to make something of themselves and prove their dedication to school and the arts. There are many athletes at my school as well. The schools pride is huge! It is a very unique environment for sure that is special.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to build and create with clay. I have a lesson that I can not wait to teach them about ancient masks in different cultures. My students will also have the opportunity to use drawing pencils and drawing paper. I have a project where students observe an object as if they are Leonardo DaVinci. Students need the watercolor paper for the lesson that I teach about color theory and portraits. Students create a portrait of their favorite food in the grid method style of Chuck Close.
The materials on this list are things that this art program needs for people in the community to see the value in art in the middle school level.
Art is such an important tool for teaching critical thinking and innovative thinking skills. The processes that the students get to go through in my art class teach many things besides the way to use a certain material. It is much more about the process rather than the product when it comes to the learning.
