Innovating the Path to Literacy Through Chromebooks!
My students need 10 laptops to complete writing assignments for core subjects. In addition, these Chromebooks will allow me to reinforce positive behavior in the classroom once assignments are completed.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Danticat's classroom raised $2,424

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hello, I am a middle school special education teacher in New York City, working with emotionally disturbed students from Harlem, the Lower East side and the Bronx. Our students generally come from low-income, working class communities and have very little access to quality literacy resources.
My students are technologically savvy and benefit from using laptops in the classroom.
They use computers to complete assignments and they use the computer in class afterwards to reduce stress. They enjoy online games and listening to music as well as socializing with each other. This form of interaction is welcomed in our classrooms because of the level of anxiety and constant worry they go through in school and at home. Despite these challenges, our students are resilient and aim to achieve higher levels of academic success.
My Project
Students in my classroom have experienced the most success when they’ve been able to demonstrate their mastery of a concept through the use of technology. With a lack of resources and funds, we have been limited to using graphic organizers and sharing computers for publishing writing assignments. These Chromebooks will allow students to boost their confidence and motivate them to complete tasks that require higher amounts of focus and concentration. This additional resource would supplement the writing instruction and would give students the option of editing and submitting projects electronically. I want my students to continue developing literacy skills and intend on making sure my students are college ready by exposing them to different programs and software that many higher institutions use such as Google Doc, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Reader, etc.
My students are very much aware that school is one of the only places where they’ll have access to a variety of instructional tools and my hope is that they’ll go to high school maybe even college with a working knowledge of how to use these programs.
Having access to these Chromebooks will allow students to build healthy study habits and self-regulation strategies to help keep them composed during stressful situations. I have noticed that integrating technology in the lessons has helped reduce behavioral outbursts and have allowed students to really flourish. Students are engaged and completely immersed in what they are doing when given the option to produce something in writing on a word processing program or practice a skill on an online game. Students have also been observed helping each other when playing online games and doing group projects. With these new Chromebooks, my students will have the ability to explore other programs and creatively complete projects using computer applications. Thank you in advance.
