Innovate & Accelerate: Building STEM-based Vehicles

Help me give my students a chance to design and build their own STEM-based vehicle project for our magnetism/electricity unit.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Driscoll's classroom raised $674

My Project

The proposed project is a STEM vehicle-building activity for students in a special education co-taught cluster in the 7th grade. We end our year with units on energy, electricity, and magnetism, and these kits have elements from all these units. Each student would receive a vehicle of their choosing from the kit box, two batteries, and Sharpies to help design their vehicle. Once the vehicle is designed and built, students would give a written description of their vehicle and explain how energy is transferred to make their vehicles begin and end motion. It provides them with a positive incentive at the end of the year, which is a difficult time for student engagement.

An added bonus is that each student would get to bring their completed vehicle home!

Unfortunately, our school district has faced significant budget cuts, directly impacting the resources available for student projects. This means that while our students are eager to engage in innovative and hands-on learning experiences, particularly in STEM fields like our vehicle-building project, the necessary funding simply isn't available through traditional school channels. Your support would directly bridge this gap, allowing these bright young minds to access the materials and opportunities they need to thrive and develop critical skills that will benefit them and our community. This project is especially vital as many students, primarily from low socioeconomic backgrounds, lack intrinsic motivation and struggle to connect with the curriculum.

The intended purpose of the proposed project covers 3 standards of the Massachusetts Science frameworks in Electricity and Magnetism, Energy Transfer, and Technology and Engineering.
