Inner-City Teens in Need of Mental & Emotional Health Support

Help me give my students access to a safe and inviting classroom environment that provides tools and resources for managing mental and emotional health concerns.

My Project

The majority of our students come from low-income households and face socio-economic disparities. Although our campus has wonderful counselors and external support that offer resources to at-risk students, there is often more I feel I could do to be present in the lives of our young people.

I am requesting support to obtain resources to set up a "coffee-shop-inspired" calming corner in our high-school photography classroom; in addition to tools that will motivate and inspire our youth when faced with difficult life challenges.

I envision being able to grant students the opportunity to work collaboratively in the corner on class assignments and a space to center themselves when needed. I also intend to embed mindfulness in my approach to driving instruction, allowing students to use the sketchbooks and the microphone ball to express themselves with creativity in response to the task at hand.

I genuinely believe that our students are brilliant and that many of the disciplinary issues that surface are due to unaddressed mental and emotional concerns. I know that for many school is their safe space and I hope to make my approach to teaching more effective in helping our youth to develop into well-rounded adults.
