Inner-City Latin Scholars Need Your Help!

My students need 35 copies of the book "The Lightning Thief."

FULLY FUNDED! Teacher DiColandrea's classroom raised $354

I teach Classical Latin to middle school students at an inner-city low-income public school in New York. My 7th and 8th grade students made history this year with their stellar performance on the National Latin Exam, and they're currently preparing for the New York State Second Language Proficiency Exam in Latin. (We are trying very hard at my school to institutionalize the Latin program so that my top students in 8th grade can jump right to 10th grade Latin and eventually be able to take the AP Latin course that is being offered for the first time at my school next year! In this way, even my small steps with the students as 7th graders will eventually have an impact when they are applying to AP courses and colleges.)

This book is an awesome introduction to themes in Roman mythology, and it is aligned to the grade level of most of my students. I know that my kids would love reading this book and would get a lot out of it in terms of exposure to stories and characters in mythology. Unfortunately, at my school, the principal does not even have money to buy paper (teachers have had to buy their own paper for the last year!). There is just no room in the budget to buy new books.

With a class set of "The Lightning Thief," I can teach this engaging and educational story as a unit next year. Many of my students have already identified mythology as their favorite part of Latin class, and being exposed to this book will really enable me to engage them in what will inevitably be a memorable and meaningful unit.

Your help will hook my students on mythology and Latin in general. Last year, there were fewer than one hundred African-American students across the country who took the AP Latin Exam - my work (and your help!) invests in current 7th and 8th graders to change that number.
