Inner-City Latin Scholars Love The Lightning Thief!

My Students

In the inner-city school where I teach Latin to 7th graders, the principal doesn't have money to provide the teachers with paper, much less buy class sets of books that captivate the kids' attention and make Roman/Greek mythology come alive for them.

My 7th graders made history these last two years by taking the National Latin Exam.

Last year, 31 of them received prizes from the National Classical League for their stellar performance. They just completed the test a few weeks ago and just about every day now they eagerly ask me whether I've gotten their scores back yet.

My Project

As a way to reward them after six months of grueling Latin grammar (conjugations, declensions, translations, etc.), I had the idea that I would teach Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief. I put up my proposal on DonorsChoose and, thanks to a generous donor like you, my kids are now flying through the first book in this popular series all about Roman/Greek mythology. This unit has been so successful that it is clear to me that having the second book in the series on hand would be a great way to continue motivating them to learn about mythology and Latin.

My kids are some of the only (if not the only) middle school-ers in an inner-city school to be studying classical Latin, and, if I can get them hooked on the study of Latin now, it will make a tremendous difference for them in a few years as they study foreign languages and take the SAT in high school.
