This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Inner city students have a hard time connecting to literature they read in school, especially my students that come from different countries. They are faced with a different culture that they do not seem to understand. The novel "Across a Hundred Mountains" by Reyna Grande, will capture their reality and will engage their reading!!

Students in this classroom have recently arrived to this country seeking new opportunities!

They come in scared and feeling lonely and we make them feel welcomed. In this class we learn English as a second language. Students in this classroom are eager to learn, participate and explore. They are constantly faced with the toughest of struggles which are: language barriers, racism and some are here alone to help their families in their native countries. Although faced with many of these obstacles, they are all over achievers who go above and beyond what is expected and graduate at the top of their class.

My Project

With these novels, we can begin to read at a critical level regardless of their language barrier. This novel relate to their lives and students will be able to make connections. Furthermore, since they will be more engaged due to the culturally relevant reading, we can now write more essays, have class discussions, all while learning the language.

Inner city students need more culturally relevant novels in order for them to become more engaged.

This book reveals how one girl cross one hundred mountains. These students have crossed more than that to have opportunities...let's give it to them!!!
