My Students
My students are a curious, energetic group of students who love the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and make a mess in the art room.
The 300+ students in my art classes range from Kindergarten to 4th grade.
Most of the students who attend my school (a 50+ year old school with a rich neighborhood history) live in or close to the neighborhood where we are located. Many of their family members have also attended our school. My students come to art every 3 days, for an hour each visit. Seeing the students this often is exciting, and I strive to give students a variety of rich experiences with many new and interesting art supplies.
My Project
Gelli Printing plates are one of our new materials with which to work, but they work best with acrylic paints, and fabric paints rather than printmaking inks. Acrylic paints are very versatile. They come in bright rich colors, cover well, and can be thinned or thickened easily. By thinning them slightly, with the use of acrylic mediums, they can be applied to the Gelli Plates and used as a printing ink. Their bright colors will give students the opportunity to print with a variety of colors, and pair the inking colors with interesting papers for a multitude of varied effects. Students will work in small groups, helping each other through the printmaking process. This will encourage them to work together as a team, a valuable skill. As they work through the process of printmaking, they learn to appreciate their successes, and analyze their mistakes. Writing experiences will come from their growing ability to analyze their work, and make decisions about their work.
Your donation to my project will improve my classroom by continuing my goal of exposing all of my students to materials and processes that they might not otherwise receive.
Increasing my students' ability to apply concepts from many content areas in their artwork is increasingly important, as we search for ways that students will be engaged and interested learners in elementary school and beyond.
