My Students
I am an ESL (now ENL: English as a New Language) teacher at an elementary school in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NY. We have about 80 English Language Learners in the entire school - over 15% of our population. Our ENL department consists of only 2 teachers.
Our students come from a variety of places around the world: Yemen, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Bangladesh, Honduras, and Haiti.
With so many languages in each ENL group, we need to differentiate our lessons so everyone can access the material. This means a lot of visuals, extra worksheets that make the content comprehensible, and so on. These kids really want to learn, which makes me want to work even harder for them. I want to be able to give them every support possible.
My Project
If you are a teacher, you know we NEED to print. We NEED to copy. It's not a want, it's a need. It's necessary for our job, but it costs a lot and they do not provide us with ink. I have spent thousands on ink in the past, so I need your help. I print so much. I print worksheets, pictures, visuals for the room, letters to the parents, exams, etc. I feel like I'm constantly printing and running out of ink.
You will be helping 80 English Language Learners and their families acquire the necessary supports they deserve.
These materials will be used immediately, and hopefully, will last for most of the year. This might be the greatest gift you could give our department, our students, and our ENL families.
