Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have grit! Character. Spirit. Perseverance. Passion.
Everyone has a story.
My students may only be 9, 10 and 11, but they already have a lifetime worth of stories to tell. It is my job to provide them with the tools to help them refine their storytelling.
I am one of the lucky people who enjoy going to work every day, so I am happy to be part of the 99%. My students are free spirits and are sponges waiting to soak everything up. They attend school in a densely populated part of the city.
My Project
As we get ready to celebrate Christmas and many upcoming holidays like New Years, Black History and Women History Month, we will be working to research and create projects on influential American's whom have overcome barriers in order to be who they became. Students will research and create projects to explain to their classmates about the person they've selected. They will find out how this person embraced diversity, or overcame the color barriers. What happened during that time period? How did these inspiring Americans push forth against negativity and resistance? What kind of sacrifices were made? Why should we aspire to be like this person/ these people? The invaluable information will need to be shared. Students will need the printer to produce and share their work. And the printer is useless unless we get the ink asap.
In the world we live in today, we are so fortunate that we can coexist and learn from so many cultures.
I want my students to discover for themselves that without people like Dr. Martin Luther King, and Jackie Robinson laying down the groundwork, we may not be where we are today. The diversity in the community I work in is astounding and I hope for nothing more but for my children to learn, respect, and embrace such a gift.
