This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember walking into the library, seeing a book on display, and just knowing you had to read that book? Books on display are so much more attractive to readers then books shoved on a shelf.

I teach two 5th grade classes at a Title I school where 98% of our student population receive free or reduced lunch.

I teach children with a variety of reading levels including children reading on or above grade level, children who are English Language learners, and children reading two to three years below grade level. Most of my students don't like to read because they feel under-confident in their ability to read.

My Project

It is my daily challenge to engage students with reading so that they will become more comfortable with text. My students tend to shy away from informational text such as biographies or books on oceans. What I have noticed is that if I put an informational book on the tray of the board, my students suddenly desire to read it. What would happen if I could display all types of books in the front of the room? With a book display shelf and magnetic book display holders, my students would see all of these incredible books in our classroom and long to pick them up and read them.

My hope is that through this project, my students will develop not only a love of reading, but also an interest in reading informational text.
