Indoor Recess Reborn!

Help me give my students a stimulating STEM-filled and art-rich experience, so that indoor recess is never a letdown again!

My Project

On those rainy and cold days, when the announcement arrives that recess will be moving indoors, the news is often met with groans. It's not difficult to see why! Just last year, Brooklyn Prospect - Downtown Elementary unveiled their brand new rooftop recess area, complete with a collection of massive "Imagination Blocks," through which students can unleash their creativity, building fortresses, tools, and other clever constructions. But during indoor recess, 3rd Graders have no such creative outlet, other than a tired set of Legos and a few classic board games with missing pieces. Too often, indoor recess devolves into needlessly physical play and squabbles over resources. I want to offer students a better experience when they are compelled to play indoors.

Now, more than ever, 3rd Graders at my school need indoor recess activities that awaken the engineers, artists, and innovators that lurk within.

With our school's roof area able to accommodate only 2 out of 3 sections of 3rd Graders per day, one class will always have indoor recess. This collection of highly stimulating art and engineering materials will revolutionize indoor recess by providing students with a range of dynamic materials that will empower them to explore, create, and discover.

From vivid art posters that can take weeks to complete, to instructive art manuals and sticker designs, those who once had to settle for a few blank sheets of paper and a bin of markers can now create magic on the page every day, while also refining their motor skills. And for those who may have defaulted to the same Lego creations each day, there are sparkling new mediums with which to flex their engineering muscles. These materials will be shared and rotated across three classrooms and over 80 students will benefit. Thank you for your support!
