it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are special to me for a number of reasons. I am going into my 10th year working at a Title I school where 100% of the students receive either free or reduced breakfast and lunch. The population of the student body at our school consists of general education, special education, students with disabilities and students that are English language learners. Although the majority of my students live in poverty and are disadvantaged socially and economically, my classroom expectations for them are high. I incorporate high energy, and lots of movement daily. I expect a lot from my students and they expect a lot from me. I wouldn't have it any other way, nor would I choose to work with a different group of students. They are faced with so many daily challenges, but they manage to come to school everyday eager to learn.
My Project
Teachers and students are often disappointed when they hear that the class is having indoor recess. Unfortunately, when it happens, it is out of our control. The usual indoor recess activities include coloring or just hanging out with friends. My goal with this project is to provide a wide variety of games, activities and snack prizes that will be extremely engaging, but beneficial at the same time.
Allowing students opportunities to build using Jenga, play games such as Phase 10, Connect 4, Checkers, Skip Bo, and Uno will help students socially interact with their peers appropriately, problem solve, and use their brains in a whole different way.
With so many fun options, they won't realize they are learning and gaining much needed social skills.
This past school year was full of technology but lacked face-to-face interaction. Receiving the materials for this project will make indoor recess something we look forward to rather than dread. I know we will all enjoy taking a short brain break and allow them a moment to enjoy being a kid!
