Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.

Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.

My Project

We will be opening our school to both in person and remote learning this fall. Unfortunately, any supplies that I would normally have for students to use in the classroom cannot be shared by multiple students, nor safely sent home to remote students without breaking social distancing and disinfection protocol. Therefore, each student needs to have their own set of materials that they can have whether in the classroom or remote from home.

With families already bearing economic hardships from before the shutdown, I cannot ask families to purchase more school supplies for their children during this economic crisis.

These most basic materials will help us get the most important supplies to students so we can try to keep the school year as functional as possible, and learning on track for all students. This will allow for students to continue their notes, and activities both in the classroom, and at home regardless of the learning choices each family has made. It will also allow for students to continue working in the classroom without the need to share supplies, as well as offer the same learning opportunities to students who are learning remotely. We know this is a challenging time for all families and communities, but anything you can do to help support our students means so much.
