Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are English language learners from many Spanish, French and Arabic-speaking countries. I also teach students from Bangladesh and Albania. They are a diverse group of learners and they acquit themselves admirably to the difficult process of learning the English language and American culture.
My Project
Students do a lot of assigned reading in school: informational articles, textbooks and the classics, for example. I want my students to also know that reading can be personal and pleasurable. I want them to know that reading is something that can and should be done at home, on transit and on school breaks. Many of my students are struggling readers, and letting them pick their own books can give them agency that will encourage them to be independent readers. These individual reading books will help my students make empowering choices that will positively impact their literacy.
