My Students
"I'm a feminist!" These simple but powerful words of identity spoken by the black male students who "graduate" from my gender studies class are some of the most beautiful student outcomes I can hope for. I teach Gender Studies at the high school level in the South Bronx and students vie to be in the class. Creating a safe space where students can discuss gender bias is not easy, but I think it's vitally important. My students come from families in poverty and are all black or latino or mixed race. Together we discuss issues of gender inequality and the intersection of gender and race discrimination. My students bring new perspectives to the conversations and activities I plan for class each day.
My Project
My students are energetic readers, and they love to make notes in the books they read. My students have worked so incredibly hard in the first part of our course so, I would love to give them each their own copy of our core text for unit three in Gender Studies. I know they will love this book and cherish it in their personal libraries for years to come. I know owning this book, The Education of Kevin Powell:A Boy's Journey into Manhhod, would mean a lot to each of my students, and being able to write in the book as they read would further enhance their reading and learning experience. Please help my students become the best readers they can be by funding this project for our class.
