My Project

Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults will open my students’ eyes to the connections between environmental stewardship, Indigenous wisdom, and social justice in ways that are both relevant and transformative. Through the powerful blend of storytelling and science in this text, students will learn how deeply interconnected we are with the natural world and with each other. By reading about sustainable practices and reciprocity with nature, students will not only gain an understanding of ecology but also a sense of responsibility toward the environment—an awareness they can carry into their daily lives.

With the specific materials I'm requesting, copies of Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults, my students will directly apply the concepts of regeneration and stewardship discussed in the book by creating their own schoolyard habitat.

With tools for soil testing, plant identification, and habitat mapping, they’ll gain practical scientific skills while engaging with the land in a meaningful way. These experiences will empower them to see how individual and community actions can support environmental and social justice.

My students are remarkable thinkers and leaders, with a drive to make a positive impact. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives, enriching our classroom discussions on social responsibility and justice. Many are already passionate about issues like climate change, and Braiding Sweetgrass will deepen their understanding of how social justice and environmental care are intertwined. My goal is to cultivate their empathy, knowledge, and leadership, so they can become advocates for a just and sustainable future. Through this project, they’ll see firsthand the power of a respectful, reciprocal relationship with the earth.
