Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The hit book "Braiding Sweetgrass" has been adapted into a young adult book, perfect for my 7th grade readers.

My classroom is full of eager minds ready to gain knowledge and experience the beautiful connections between indigenous wisdom and science of plants.

As part of a school program that values the holistic health of children, it is vital that the students understand that value of the nature around us, how we interact with it, and how we benefit from it.

Our school is committed to continuously increasing the representation of our indigenous ancestors who stewarded the unceded land we currently occupy for centuries prior to colonization.

Indigenous land stewardship and the continued cultural contributions of the nation of the Three Fires—comprised of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations in present day Chicago contribute to our students well rounded understanding of our own citizen responsibilities and the interconnectedness of our city and the natural resources that we all rely on for clean air, water, beauty, food and a variety of other purposes.

The hit book "Braiding Sweetgrass" has been adapted into a young readers' version, perfect for a school focused on sustainability and food.

This book provides a model for how each of us can explore and celebrate our cultural heritage, no matter the forces, distance or time that may have separated or complicated our connections to our heritage and ancestry.

Additionally, this book is simply fun and encourages an attitude of curiosity, joy and exploration of our natural world.
