Indigenous Weaving, Peace Circles & Storytelling from Around the World!

Help me give my students , Pre-K-8, visual art making materials, play therapy manipulatives and storytelling tools to build intercultural awareness rooted in cross-cultural folktales and culturally-responsive literature, while learning Indigenous Circle Healing and student-centered Restorative Justice practices.

My Project

Our students are a remarkable group of diverse children and artists growing up in the heart of Chicago.

We are a PreK- 8 public school that specializes in arts integration of core learning subjects to connect student learning to everyday life experience. This project will provide nearly 700 children with restorative healing strategies and safe-space art-making rooted in Indigenous practices of the Americas and around the globe.

We will practice community stitching and weaving (baskets, rugs, totes, wall hangings and more) based on global, grassroots women's art-making cooperatives. We will practice storytelling of all kinds (play therapy, illustrated journals and narrative compositions). Through Talking Circles, we will practice listening to each other. We will share peaceful resolution experiences by creating collaborative vessels, tapestries and stories with friends and community. We will share our learning in a multifaceted art exhibit to honor and elevate numerous forms of Indigenous and diverse experience, past and present, entitled Otsaliheliga=We Are Grateful! (Cherokee).

We will use Best Practice forms of Restorative Justice and the pedagogy of equity, individuation and criticality in our Circle Practice. We will use ancient stories, such as Anansi the Spider, current stories such as Milo Imagines the World (Matt de la Peña) to share the Circle of Life in its many awe-inspiring iterations...
