Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from the Southeast side of Chicago and many are from immigrant families. Almost 90% are low-income. My school is a PreK-8 building comprising around 850 students in total. The demographics are 95% Latino, 3% African-American and 2% white. All of our families are hard-working, blue-collar and proud.
Even though they might not have much, our parents push their children to work hard and make a better life for themselves.
They want their kids to grow and succeed.
My Project
My students need access to GREAT text that reflects various cultures. Middle school students love reading realistic fiction--text that they can see themselves being a part of in everyday life.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is a text that reflects indigenous culture really well.
My students need to be exposed to a multitude of phenomenal texts & this is one of them. Being able to give each student, their own copy to read and hold should foster of love of reading. I want my students to succeed.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
