Indian and Pilgrim Crafts “As Easy as Pumpkin Pie”

My students need leather pieces to stamp, a leather stamping kit, and leather strips to hang their stamped pieces around their neck. They also need quill feathers to write, and yarn and pony beads to make necklaces. They need all of these art materials to participate in our Thanksgiving Day Celebration.

We are from a small school in Southern Indiana where we celebrate holidays and honor traditions. It is our goal to help students understand traditions and holidays. We want them to know why we celebrate and how things were celebrated in the past.

Did you stamp leather, or make a bead necklace while celebrating the first Thanksgiving? Were you involved in a feast where you exchanged your hand-made gifts with other students honoring the exchanging between the Pilgrims and Indians? If you participated in these or similar activities I am sure it was something you will always remember.

I want my students to not only study history, but also understand it. I want to give them the opportunity to relive certain aspects of history. For our Thanksgiving Day activities we will recreate crafts and activities that the actual Pilgrims and Indians would have participated in. We need yarn, leather arrows and leather stamping tools, Quill feathers for writing, and many other materials to make the activities as most like actual pilgrim activities.

Think about your own educational experiences and how much you appreciated hands-on experiences. As a teacher I ask for your help in keeping our Thanksgiving Day Celebration a tradition.
