Help me give my students more calming and sensory items! A lot of my students need sensory input and it requires a 2 person process. With some of these materials we can allow students to self-regulate independently.
Students in the self-contained classroom at the Budd school have various disabilities and abilities. Each student has some sort of emotional or sensory need, and it hinders their ability to focus in the classroom. We have a variety of materials and processes that we can use to help each student. A lot of the materials we have are for adults to use with the students. Getting more materials that can be used independently will give these students independence and control over their bodies.
Students who are sensory seeking need a heavy input "diet" and these materials will allow students to give themselves input to be successful without waiting for an adult.
This type of control and independence is important to foster at such an early age so they can see how to make themselves successful. It provides the with the power to believe in themselves and not always rely on an adult to help their bodies.
The plan is to showcase items students can use outside of school to help them regulate. These massagers, body socks, and light covers are simple items that can be used in any setting such as classrooms, bedrooms, and future work offices. Using them in the classroom will help build that association and give power back to the students.
