Independent Reading

My Project

Since the pandemic, we have fewer students who are willing to read beyond a screen. Apps and websites encourage students to click through or move on to the next, more interesting topic. They have learned they don't need to engage with a text; they can be passive readers.

So many students at the beginning of the year, tell us that they don't like to read, that they aren't good at reading, that books are dumb.

There is nothing like watching those students when they find a book that changes that attitude and opens a door they didn't even know was there!

We've had previously reluctant readers ask for the next book in a series, or for more books like the one they found, or even be reluctant when free-reading time ends. This is such a gift for them, for their children, and for our society!

We know that facility in reading improves empathy, critical thinking, mental stamina, and educational ability. These are life skills, and the sooner our students develop them, the more time they will have to hone these skills.

Our independent reading program has a no strings attached policy: No tests, reading logs, pressure. We just want students to find this other gear in the brains as they choose a text to commit to for the 20-30 minute duration of dedicated reading time.

The high interest books we have chosen will allow students to see that reading is more than the classics? The perfect book exists, and we want to help them find it!
