My Project
Middle school is hard, and it's even harder if you are a few years behind in your reading after COVID kept you out of school during key elementary years! We know one of the best ways to become a stronger reader is to read more! That's why we do sustained-silent reading every day.
One of the key components to understanding challenging grade-level texts is having some background knowledge before you start.
These books are specifically selected to build background knowledge on history topics students are likely to encounter over the next few years of school. By getting a variety of the "What is..." series students can know what to expect from the format, which lowers their anxiety about starting a new book. These books are focused and not too thick. This year I've seen the few I already have be some of the most popular, and I've especially seen my English-Language Learners have huge success in their comprehension and retaining of information in from this series!
Not only will they build reading stamina and skills by practicing with these accessible, high-interest books, but they'll build key schema that can pay dividends in the years to come.
We also need to make sure students are working with grade-level texts. Students are more willing and able to succeed with challenging texts by listening along. That's where the headphones come to the rescue! Listening to an audio recording of a challenging text allows students to hear the text read by a model reader and gives them the opportunity to replay the text as many times as they need.
