it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
J.K. Rowling once said, "Wherever I am, if I've got a book with me, I have a place I can go and be happy." In order for one to reach this place of happiness, they need a book in their hands. From that moment onward, the endless journeys begin without leaving your current location.
My 3rd graders attend a Title One school located in the South Bronx in which 30% live in shelters.
Their goal is to read at their grade level by the end of the school year. Many struggle in the area of reading and don't have the resources to fully support and grow their reading muscle at home. For example, they do not have books to read at home; therefore, they are in need of a variety of books to borrow within the classroom.
Despite the obstacles they face on a daily basis, they are always eager to learn and never give up hope. As their teacher, I buy books of their interests out of my own pocket because I want to provide them with the opportunities to read with their peers and most importantly, instill the joy that reading can bring regardless of the challenges within their own life.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are a variety of high-interest books at various reading levels for my students. My students need books to read in our classroom library. They will be able to increase their reading skills and levels. More books in my classroom will provide the opportunities for students to borrow books to read at home. Increasing the number of books within our classroom will give my students the chance to feel successful at reading independently when they discover books they love and adore.
Your donations will help my students have a well-stocked classroom library, with a variety of books they can select from for the entire school year.
I really hope you decide to donate. As my students' love of reading grows as well as their reading muscles, so will their love of learning, which is priceless. Every dollar helps!
