Independent Living Skills: Preparing for the Future

My students need the tools such as a blender, food processer, can opener, crock pot, and more to learn how to function in the kitchen independently so that they can prepare their own food on a daily basis.

My Students

The challenge that my students face is that the majority of them do not have the skills to prepare their own food/meals independently. My goal as their teacher is to help them to learn these skills, so that they have a base minimum of five different food items that they can prepare on their own.

My students are ages 18-21 and all have some degree of developmental disability that limits their ability to function in a general education setting/curriculum.

Our program is designed to teach functional life skills to maximize each students' independence once they leave the school setting.

My Project

One of the primary domains of our curriculum is to teach Functional Life Skills. Food/meal preparation is a key component to the independent living skills we teach in the program. Our program has been blessed with our own kitchen, but we are in great need of basic kitchen tools to teach our students different aspects of food preparation. The items requested (sandwich maker, large cooking pot, can opener, blender, and toaster oven) are basic kitchen tools that will assist staff in enabling our students to reach their goal of maximized independence. Our goal is that each student will learn the skills to live one day independently and to take care of their basic needs. Being able to prepare their own meals is a huge step in this process. Being able to obtain some of these basic tools will go a long way in establishing a functional kitchen for our students to learn these skills. Thank you again for considering to assist with this project.

Our program is focused on maximizing each students' independence in as many different areas as possible.

Independent life skills in the domestic setting is a gift that is hard to measure in terms of impact on our students and their families' lives. We are thankful for the opportunity to teach and present these skills to these students; having the correct tools to do so will make our job that much easier and more effective.
