Many of the students in my school district honestly understand farm life to its fullest extent, because farming families farm 24-7, 365 days a year. Most of the farms are beef cattle farms, with a few owning goats, and other small livestock. They live the dedication their families put forth daily as they help alongside parents and grandparents with farming family traditions and as some families forge their own new traditions. It is not uncommon to see kids riding with family as they go to the feed mill, feed animals, showing animals at the fair, or cutting hay. Not all of my students get these rich experiences, so I would like to incubate eggs, and brood the chicks to provide all students new farm experiences as well as spark excitement for scientific learning and inspire new art creations.
This project will spark inspiration in all my students as they get to see chickens grow inside eggs and hatch for our Farm Inspired Art project.
The incubation process is an excellent way to teach life cycle that all students, young and old can enjoy. Anytime a classroom has hatched chicks out in the past the students are so excited they tell everyone, memories like that will stick with a child into their adult years. Education should be fun and exciting for all students as well as cross-curricular and hands-on so the learning is very impactful.
I started a yearly spring tradition with this art project. This year our project will be displayed at the Searcy County Fair as their Clothesline Art, for all to see. Having the memories of seeing the chicks grow in the eggs, hatch out, getting to look at the chicks to draw from seeing, and learning about the chicken life-cycle will make a special project extra memorable.
