Incredibly Interesting Independent Reading Books for Curious High Schoolers

My students need high quality independent reading books to help increase their reading habit.

My Students

My students are hardworking, discerning, bright, and determined. They are a broad mix of 12th graders in 4 inclusion and English as a Second language classes. The student body is predominantly Latino and African-American. They hail from working class families, and most of them will be the first in their families to attend college. The students who this project is targeting are young men of color and struggling readers. Of all my students, it is them who have a hard time choosing and finishing an appropriate book.

My Project

I am requesting books to build my independent reading library for my students. There is a significant body of research that points to independent reading as one of the single most important factors in predicting student achievement on standardized tests. Despite this fact, my students lack consistent access to high interest books. We no longer have a school librarian, and teachers do not have a budget to buy books. In my class students will choose their own books based upon their interests. They will read in class 20 minutes a day, two days a week, in addition they are expected to read at home for an additional 80 minutes a week. I will confer with them about their books to ensure that it is at an appropriate level and that they are enjoying their book. They will have an assignment to complete upon finishing their book. They are expected to finish at least two books per quarter. .
