I teach a group of highly motivated and diverse learners at a Title I elementary school. My class is an enrichment classroom with accelerated learning opportunities for my 18 high-performing scholars. These students are talented readers and enjoy challenging and above grade-level work. This year, these students will be learning grade standards but will have many opportunities to interact with text and tasks that extend beyond grade-level requirements.
When I raise the bar, my students always rise to the occasion.
My Project
I have always been the type of teacher that likes to incentive positive behavior and work habits. I like to get to know my students and find out what types of things motivate and excite them. Some students are excited by special privileges like earning the opportunity to have a special lunch with the teacher, or bring in a special item for Show and Tell. Other students are motivated by more tangible items like fun toys and prizes. Every child is unique, and praise and incentives help students of all levels build the kind of tenacity they need to reach their goals.
My goal is to celebrate my students' success in as many ways as possible: words of praise, special time together, and exciting prizes that will help them build stamina and persistence while chasing their goals.
This assortment of prizes including Smencils, special erasers, "spy" pens, "squishies", and Emoji keychains reflect the types of things that my students really love right now. They will be offered as choices for behavior rewards for making positive choices, and academic rewards for reaching goals on AR reading tests, i-Ready, and other assessments.
Students will have to earn points in order to "shop" for these items, so it also helps them learn about saving, cost, and delayed gratification. These are key concepts for understanding more complex economic principles as they get older!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
