Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hardworking, young people that come largely from lower and middle-class households. Each and every day I can't help but marvel at their effort and drive to succeed. These are kids that come early and stay late multiple days a week for tutoring, clubs, sports, and other extracurricular activities. More than anything else, my students are funny, loving, respectful, appreciative, responsible, and kind.

These students genuinely deserve so much more than they are allotted by public education budgets.

I do everything I can to help these highly deserving students, but some projects are just too big to self-fund. Your assistance in supporting public school education would be greatly appreciated.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to increase student access to technology in my classroom. I am requesting two different types of items: headphones and cameras.

One of my goals every day is to provide students an individualized and adaptive system of teaching and learning that can meet the unique learning needs of every student.

One of the best ways I have found to accomplish that goal is a blended classroom model that utilizes teacher and student videos to exchange information.

Several times a week, I record a short video lesson for students to watch in class or at home before differentiating their assignments to match their current understanding of the material. When students are viewing videos during class time, they need a set of headphones that work with our computers. These headphones will allow them to watch flipped lessons at their own pace and have greater control over their learning.

Additionally, students in my class also film their own short video explanations as an alternative to traditional quizzes. The goal in these lessons is to demonstrate mastery of the content in a more authentic way. In lieu of traditional quizzes, I allow my students to film their own math videos of them explaining a concept to demonstrate mastery. I can watch these videos after class and ensure that I am hearing from all of my students in a way that is not possible in a traditional classroom setting. While many of my students have access to a smartphone, not all do, and this creates an equity issue at times. I have requested cameras for the classroom to allow all students to film their video lessons/responses.

With your support, I know that we can increase student learning by leveraging technology to our advantage.
