My Project
Kindergarten is a critical year in a child's educational experience, as it is the first time many students enter a formal education setting. Students enter kindergarten with a variety of life experiences, background knowledge, and skills, but are all expected to obtain the same learning goals by the end of the year. One of the most important skills kindergarten-aged students will learn is how to break the alphabetic code and learn how to read.
To maximize student engagement and opportunity to experience success when transferring their small reading group skills independently, students need a variety of high interest easily decodable texts to practice with repetition.
When students encounter a text they want to read and have developed enough skills to read independently, their confidence and commitment to reading will increase. Student motivation, especially in kindergarten, is a crucial skill to help young students persevere through learning challenging that they will eventually encounter. These early experiences will shape their future perceptions of themselves as capable, confident readers.
Access to these high-interest decodable readers will provide my kindergarten students with the opportunity to see themselves as authentic readers and provide them with a plethora of options to choose from within our classroom library. These decodable readers will help develop their early literacy skills, including supporting their sight word knowledge, early phonics skills, and sentence level fluency necessary for a successful transition into the expectations of first grade.
